Sailing Into the Season

The Rye Country Day School Sailing Team has had a strong and competitive season so far, marked by teamwork, growth, and impressive performances on the water, even after only one race. Led by captains Frank Zingg ‘26 and Sara Komaroff ‘27, the team has built a positive culture founded on collaboration and healthy competition.

“The team is really great,” said Maddie Stokes ‘28.. “WWe switch up pairs often and share ideas so everyone is improving.” This dynamic allows the team to learn from each other while staying motivated to perform at their best. Komaroff also shared similar remarks, especially when competing. “We have A and B divisions, so it is competitive since not everyone gets to race,” she said. “But it really motivates everyone to do their best.” Even when not racing, the sailors are also supporting each other, offering feedback and staying engaged.

Practices are structured and focused. After heading to the American Yacht Club, sailors prepare their boats and run through drills that emphasize technique and strategy. Practices can be difficult at times due to the cold water and inconsistent conditions, but the team is always focused and prepared.

In their first race, the team saw great performance, with a fifth place finish in the Two-District Regatta at the Larchmont Yacht Club on March 28th. Looking forward, they are aiming high and hope to qualify for gold at the Maryland Silver Fleet Race in May.

With a strong, collaborative-based team culture, the RCDS Sailing team is set for success in their season ahead.
