Rollback’s Candygram Fundraiser

Written by Sadie Kolodner

As Valentine’s Day rolls around, so does Rollback’s annual candygram fundraiser. This fundraiser was started to not only raise money and support Rollback as a club, but as a fun way to engage the whole RCDS community.

Rollback, our student-run sports film club, is led by Brody Mackey ‘25 and Willow Edwards ‘25. Their mission is to highlight and film our school athletic events through video content. Mackey and Edwards, together, ran this fundraiser to further support Rollback’s mission. Edwards noted, “In years past, we have used the money for filming equipment and club events. We plan to do the same with this year’s earnings.” In previous years, this fundraiser has earned around $400. Rollback’s leaders have similar goals for this year.

What exactly is a candygram? A candygram is a box of candy delivered with a personalized message or greeting of the buyer’s choice. Located at a table outside the Math Department office, Rollback members set up a station where students could purchase a candygram for their friends, teachers, or secret admirers. The fundraiser offered two options, either a regular message for $5 or a deluxe message for $7. The most popular option was the deluxe delivery.

This year, 40 candygrams were bought and delivered. Although candygrams are often filled with heartfelt messages to friends or lovers, some take the comical route. When Edwards was asked about the funniest or most creative message, she recalled that a girlfriend sent a candygram to her boyfriend saying, “Break up with your girlfriend and be with me. Love, your secret admirer.”

Why a fundraiser with candygrams? Rather than a pizza sale, Mackey and Edwards opted to employ a unique and creative idea to raise money through the delivery of candygrams. The leaders of Rollback emphasized the joy of spreading Valentine’s cheer creatively. “It is a fun way for students and staff to connect with one another. We also tend to receive quite a few humorous orders between friends,” Edwards said.

Due to President’s Day and the long weekend, Valentine’s Day fell on a non-school day. The club, as a result of this, had to adjust the timeline. They pushed back the delivery day to February 18, so members of rollback could deliver the messages to the recipients.

If you did not get to participate in the Candygram fundraiser this year, look out for it next year!
