The Summer I Turned Media Obsessed

Written By: Camila Reyna

Summer break has ended as quickly as it has come, but students can still think back to the activities they participated in during their three months of summer break. This summer did not fail to provide new media for people to watch. New seasons of beloved TV shows came out this summer, such as season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, starring Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno, and season 2 of Wednesday, featuring Jenna Ortega. This summer was full of superhero movies, specifically Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, both featuring classic superheroes from their respective companies. Another hit movie that came out this summer was KPOP Demon Hunters, about the leader of a Kpop group that fights against demons and learns to accept herself.  This movie’s soundtrack became such a hit that one of its songs, “Golden,” is number one in the Billboard Top 100 as of August 11, 2025. Along with “Golden,” “Your Idol,”“Soda Pop,” and “How It’s Done” are all in the top 10 of the Billboard Top 100.

Dania Suliman ‘26 stated that she watched Superman, directed by James Gunn, and thought that the movie was “an improvement from the Henry Cavill one.” She went on to say, “The Henry Cavill movie was all about how powerful Superman was and was mostly focused on violence.” Suliman also stated that the casting for Superman was “great,” and that she believes that Superman’s actor, David Corenswet, was “an especially good choice because he’s so much like Superman it was almost like he was ripped straight out of the comics.” Suliman rated the movie a 9.5 out of 10 and thought that it should have been longer. Molly Hart ‘27 watched Superman as well as The Fantastic Four: First Steps, two of the largest superhero movies this summer. She “loved how hopeful they were and how they showed the best of humanity in a way…they were relatively basic in their message but it was nice to see anyway.” Hart rated Superman a 6.5 out of 10 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps a 7.5 out of 10. She also watched all four seasons of Abbott Elementary, featuring Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams. She rated this show a 7 out of 10.

Both of these students also spent some of their time this summer reading books. Suliman stated that she read Animal Farm by George Orwell and rated the book a ten out of ten because “it’s a good allegory for how corruption can spread if power and privilege are left unchecked.” Hart stated that she read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and rated it a “9.5…maybe 10” out of 10. She thought that “the way the story was tied together and the wording was so amazing.”

Between watching hit movies and reading books, many RCDS students enjoyed a fun and relaxing summer. Hopefully, more great media will be released, giving students even more chances to unwind with a new favorite movie or show!
