Hallway Runway: Back-to-school trends

Written By: Chiara Perkins ‘28

The hallways this autumn are full of variety, with students blending different aesthetics into their daily outfits. From trendy and polished outfits to casual and classic styles, campus fashion reflects both individuality and popular trends.

“I get most of my style inspiration from Pinterest and Tiktok,” notes Eva Juarez-Lace ‘28. “I love colors like brown, red, and butter yellow—and lately I’ve been into light jeans, patterned skirts, and short-sleeve cardigans or sweaters.” Social media platforms like Pinterest and Tiktok provide curated feeds and endless inspiration for pairing clothing, experimenting with textures, and discovering pieces to add to students’ wardrobe. These apps allow users to follow style influencers, save outfit ideas, and even shop directly from their posts. Many students admit they enjoy scrolling through these platforms to discover new trends and then adapt them to fit their personal taste.

Accessories play a large role in tying looks together. Jewelry remains popular, especially layered pieces with varying lengths and mixes of gold and silver. Hair accessories like claw clips, headbands, and barrettes continue to serve as both functional and decorative pieces. Bags are another key detail—while most students stick with practical backpacks, some opt for over-the-shoulder style or tote bags to compliment their outfits. These bags often feature solid colors, brand-name prints, and even charms or keychains for personalization. Izzy Bernie ‘28 notes that shoulder bags can be uncomfortable during a long school day, making a backpack her go-to choice for balancing both function and style.

When asked about the dress code’s impact, Bernie shares that it didn’t affect her personal choices as much as it limited options. “The dress code didn’t change my choices, just my options. I would’ve worn the same thing—I just don’t have the option to wear sweats,” she said. Many students agree with this sentiment; the dress code hasn’t drastically influenced their style, but it has narrowed the range of what they can wear.

Color and patterns are other ways students express themselves. Many are drawn to pastels, with butter yellow and baby pink being a standout, while others prefer darker tones like maroon as the weather gets cooler. Some students, such as Willow Lane ‘28, choose lighter shades such as white jeans in warmer weather and switch to darker colors when the season changes. This autumn, polka dots, stripes, and floral prints have emerged as popular choices, adding playfulness and character to everyday outfits.

Overall, back-to-school fashion this season has been all about balance—between comfort and expression, practicality and trendiness. Whether accessorising, experimenting with colors, or scrolling through social media for outfit ideas, students are finding endless ways to display their individuality through fashion.
