On February 18, students enrolled in Chinese classes in the Upper School received an unexpected yet thrilling opportunity: a last-minute field trip to watch Ne Zha 2 in theaters. Organized and led by Upper School Chinese teacher Ms. Shang, the trip to AMC Port Chester was a rare chance for students to immerse themselves in Chinese culture through one of the most visually stunning animated films of recent years.
Ne Zha 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Ne Zha (2019), has captivated audiences with its breathtaking animation, thrilling action sequences, and emotionally powerful storytelling. The film builds on the mythology of the rebellious young deity Ne Zha, blending ancient folklore with modern cinematic and animation techniques to create an unforgettable viewing experience.
As students settled into their seats, they donned their 3D glasses, preparing to be transported into a dazzling world of gods and demons. The visuals were nothing short of spectacular: vivid colors, dynamic fight scenes, and fluid animation that made every moment feel alive.
The film was presented in Chinese with English subtitles, allowing students to practice their language skills while following the action-packed narrative. Moments of humor as well as emotion added depth to the story, making it a truly engaging experience for both heritage speakers and language learners alike.
By the time the credits rolled, students had left the theater buzzing with excitement, discussing favorite scenes and marveling at the film’s beauty. For many, this last-minute field trip was an entertaining excursion and a meaningful cultural experience. “It was a great experience,” said Xavier Perkins ‘26, an Honors Chinese 4 student. “Watching the movie in Chinese made it even more immersive, and the animation was incredible.” Devan Patel ‘26 also praised the film, saying, “Honestly, it had some of the best animation I’d ever seen in any animated movie. It also had an insane, unexpected plot twist. I recommend it to everyone.”
With Ne Zha 2, Chinese animation continues to push boundaries and gain recognition on the global stage. As of February 20, 2025, “Ne Zha 2” has grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film’s success is a testament to the growing influence of Chinese cinema, and for the students who attended the screening, it was a memorable journey into a world where myth and animation beautifully combine.
