As the winter season is in full swing, the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team has been showing up both on the court and off with a record of 6-4.
One of the team’s strengths this season has been their teamwork and ability to collaborate for success on the court. According to Lucy Shurslep ‘28, “The team’s biggest strength during the first half of the season has been working together and making sure we all execute the plays.” This team’s chemistry undoubtedly contributes to their success.
Off the court, these girls create a supportive and cohesive team environment. Through a memorable team dinner, where players and parents faced off in games of trivia, volleyball, and word scramble, they furthered their bond.
When asking Shurslep to choose one word that best describes the team, she chose “improvement.” According to Shurslep, “Every player is committed to learning from their mistakes and continuing to grow.” Shurslep described that in comparison to preseason, everybody has made tremendous improvement both individually and collectively.
When asked who inspires and motivates them, many players highlighted Captain Anika Bhat ‘25 for her exceptional leadership and kindness. In high-intensity games, Bhat has the ability to raise the team’s spirits while keeping them motivated. Her leadership, along with that of Co-Captains Sydney Cohn ‘25 and Claire Jiange ‘26, has been pivotal in guiding the team to victory this season.
Looking ahead, the team aims to maintain its winning record while also having fun on the court. On Wednesday, January 22, the Wildcats will travel to King for a competitive game, hoping to return home victorious. Then, on Saturday, they will participate in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer tournament, hosted at Fieldston. This event brings together teams from across New York City and Westchester for a day filled with basketball and excitement, all while raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
The girls’ basketball team has much to look forward to, including four more home games before competing in the NYSAIS tournament to close out the season. Be sure to stop by their upcoming games and cheer them on from the sidelines – your presence makes a huge difference!
