The Boys Varsity Ice Hockey Team is approaching this season with fierce determination and excitement! Practices officially kicked off on Wednesday, November 13, with the team coming together for a few skates to get ready for the season ahead. Captain Aedan Pearl ‘25 remarked that after a few practices, “the rust is coming off. Even in just those practices, it is clear from the effort that the team is looking forward to competing this year.”
The goal on everyone’s mind is the FAA Championship. After last year’s success, this year’s hockey team is eager to return and claim that title once again. Pearl says, “I don’t think me, the team, or the coaching staff could be more fired up heading into this season. We are returning as champions with no intention of giving up the trophy.” With such high expectations and a drive to defend their spot at the top, the team is ready to face any challenges that come their way. The captain also had a humorous take on the team’s drive, sharing about his co-captain, “Ari [Israel ‘25] actually sleeps with the trophy every night; he gets lonely so he definitely doesn’t want to lose it.”
Head Coach Forzaglia emphasized the team’s desire to build a positive community, saying, “our goals are alway the same: to help teach [the players] how to lead and work as a team, and maybe win a few games along the way.” The first scrimmage of the season was held at home on November 26th against ETBE (Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Bronxville, Edgemont). RCDS won 5-1 with Aiden Wu ‘27, Richie Morrow ‘26, Paul Heintz ‘27, and Jacob Tucznio ‘27 scoring. The coaches thought the team could have had a better start, but the team played well in the third period. It was a great start to the season, but they still have plenty to work on.
They played another scrimmage on December 2nd against Mamaroneck High School and won 5-1. However, the first real game and season-opener was played on December 4th against New Rochelle High School, and the Wildcats started off strong, winning 9-1. Looking down the line, the Wildcats host Rye High at home this year, which should be exciting for many students.
As the season begins, the hard work and dedication of the varsity ice hockey team is bound to pay off.
