Building Connections Through Competition

House Cup, a yearlong tradition started in 2021 by faculty members and students after COVID-19, has quickly become a highlight of the school year. The competition fosters unity throughout the Upper School and sparks friendly rivalry, as houses battle against each other to claim the winning title, bragging rights, and their homeroom’s name engraved on a plaque.

Freshmen and new students may be wondering, what is House Cup? When asked this question, Emily Cheigh, the 2024-2025 student body president, responded, “House cup is a year-long tournament between the houses. During Community Meetings and other competitions throughout the year, you can win points for your house. At the end of the year, the winner is crowned and wins a prize.” From athletic events like field day to other challenges and contests, there is a wide range of opportunities for students to contribute to their house’s success.

This year, students should expect to see exciting games at Community Meeting on Mondays, including a new addition – seat basketball. Cheigh notes, “I’m personally most excited for the seat basketball. That was a new thing we added during Field Day this year and it was really fun for both me and the other students. I’m hoping to do that more in the future.” Watch out for more seat basketball games to score your house some points!

Ms. Drago, one of the original creators of House Cup, offered a faculty perspective on the competition. Having helped to launch the tradition three years ago to create a more unified community, Ms. Drago continues to play an important role, as she helps organize some community meetings, and keeps track of the points acquired. When asked if there is a certain part or round of house cup that students should look forward to, she mentioned that there is “something every year for the various heritage months, for people to learn about and to collect points.” Be sure to keep an eye on these events, with big ones coming up in February and March.

With a mix of old traditions and new activities, House Cup continues to unite students in the theme of connection. Over the course of the school year, everyone has the chance to contribute, making it anyone’s game until the final points are tallied, and the winning house celebrates with the ultimate prize: cake.
