Striking Goals

Get ready to cheer extra hard this season, because Girls’ Varsity Soccer (GVS) is going for gold this year! Captains Lily Smith ’25, Mary Grace Eubanks ’25, and Susie Geller ’25 led the team during preseason and are excited as they begin the charge to victory.

August 19th marked the first day of preseason. Focusing on drills, fitness, set plays, and “off-the-field chemistry,” as Smith called it, the team worked hard to make their three weeks of preparation count. Those weeks were vital, as they provided hours of focused time when players could hone their skills and learn to work together.

The team claimed their first win (4-1) against Hackley in the season opener on Wednesday, September 4, and they are excited for the months ahead. “Our spirits are very high going into the season,” Smith said. The team has “a good returning core” in addition to “many new players,” and she is hopeful that if they work together, they can win the FAA tournament.

The ever-important, stress-inducing, and looming FAA games, in which the team competes against surrounding private schools, is what the GVS is most hopeful and excited about. Though RCDS did not win last year, perhaps this year’s team is exactly what is needed to emerge victorious.

The team also has their eye on games against St. Lukes, as last year the team “lost to them in the playoffs” and they “want some revenge” to even the score.

The season is shaping up to be a successful one for Girls’ Varsity Soccer, and spectators should prepare for nothing short of superb out on the field!
