Girls Varsity Soccer Mid Season Report

Written by Mia Herz and Sophia Shen

The Girls Varsity Soccer team is looking better than ever, crushing opponents and scoring big. Over the past few weeks, they have been undefeated for the past nine games and put other teams to shame. The team has not won without a fight, literally, as Junior Captain Lily Smith ‘25 was recently attacked and received a punch to the face during the Portledge home game on September 14th. Senior Captain Liz Kavanagh ‘24 was also rendered a victim after being bulldozed while she was innocently trying to pass the ball.

GVS is proudly led by Captains Kavanagh, Smith, and Romi Schreiber ‘24. These captains have led the team to victory several times; in a recent game on October 17 against Masters, the Wildcats won 4 – 1 with goals from all three captains, including two from Kavanagh. This season, the juniors are maintaining their strong reputation through note-worthy plays that demonstrate unity on the field, with valuable players including Mara Visentin ‘25 and Susie Geller ‘25. Additionally, junior goalie Isa Pierry ‘25 has proved indispensable in various games. The team includes a vast range of ages, with representation across all grades. Kavanagh believes the team has really bonded this season. “We have a wide range of ages on the team but despite that, I think we are a tight knit team and all such great friends. This also has an effect on the field as well and has benefited our performance in games and practices.”

Over Wildcat Weekend, the team earned yet another victory, winning 7 – 1 against FASNY. Most recently, the team won their last FAA league game 4 – 1 against Masters on October 17. Kavanagh is beyond proud of their accomplishments, saying, “the team has worked so hard this year and we definitely deserve the success we have had in the past few weeks.” The Girls Varsity Soccer team is still working hard to prepare for upcoming games, and hopes to win the FAA Playoffs for the first place championship title.
