As we near the end of a fairly short – lived summer, preseason for our fall sport athletes begins, bringing with it the reminder of RCDS spirit and lessening dread for the upcoming school year. Boys varsity soccer specifically, according to captain Jonah Gurion (24’), “hopes to have a successful season”.
Jonah himself has been playing soccer for 12 years, and most enjoys the “competitiveness and the feeling of being completely into a game and focused”. He concedes that the conditioning part of preseason is difficult but is also “personally glad {we} do it and need to”. The team had a relatively difficult season last school year, drawing 5 wins and 7 losses. Jonah believes these statistics to be so regrettable because “as far as our past, the season was not terrible but the prior season we did really well so it was disappointing to do worse after that”. Despite this, the team hasn’t given up hope, and neither should its supporters. Although past seniors will be missed by coaches and players alike, Jonah believes “we have a good team this year” and “will be alright with some strong underclassmen joining the team”.
Soccer fans among RCDS students should watch out for the upcoming Hackley game; a shot for redemption from the disheartening 6-0 loss last season. This score sharply contrasts the statistic from 2 years back, with RCDS driving a 5-0 loss into the Hackley records. Because of this setback, Jonah explains that the team is “looking to beat them {Hackley} this year” and once again assert its superiority on the field.
Though the end of summer can bring about feelings of dread and resentment, it is important to remember the positives of going back to school, and focus on making this the best academic and athletic school year RCDS has had. Good luck to all fall athletes, and we look forward to seeing you on the field or track!
