As a result of differing circumstances and environments, there isn’t much that each and every grade of the upper school has in common. The one binding sentiment for seemingly all students is the underlying sense of dread brought on by the winter months. As temperatures drop, so do mentalities, mostly as a result of seasonal depression and remembrances of the long, arduous road ahead. Luckily for this year’s underclassmen, a dance taking place on January 27 acts as a sort of respite from the seemingly endless assignments and work. This celebration is the first of its kind for all underclassmen, a dance that students can thank sophomore officers Emily Cheigh, Julia Kroin, Luke Stronski, and Blake James for, as well as freshman officers Arav Ramaswamy, Winn Metrailler, Charlie Pearle, and Julia Gallardo.
Specifically, the dance will take place in the black box theater on campus, and is Winter Wonderland themed. Sophomore body president Emily Cheigh 25’ is excited “for all of it, because a lot of our grade has talked about a dance for a while, and we missed out on Vincent’s and the 7/8th grade dance. We think this will be a fun opportunity to have before prom.” She hopes that this dance could become an annual thing. Additionally , there will be no specific gender asking, but asking others within each grade, whether it be a friendly or romantic gesture, is encouraged. Cheigh specifically believes that this will “get kids more excited”, but also concedes that asking friends to go is fun too and therefore, either is fine.
Overall, the upcoming dance will act as a way to increase school spirit, especially because only those within the school are allowed to attend, and provides an event for underclassmen to look forward to. This excitement is perfectly – timed, as typically the season after winter break, nearing march exams, and yet seemingly far away from spring break, can be difficult to handle. With this (hopefully annual) new dance, both classes, 25’ and 26’, can treat the night as a break from the strenuous school work typically prevalent around that time. As a whole student body, we thank the Freshman and Sophomore officers for working so hard to organize this exciting event, and hope to see everyone, Freshmen and Sophomores alike, there.
