Robert Wang–
En Garde, Pret, Alle!
The shuffle of steps and engagement of blades ring throughout the air as two figures dance on a metal piste, their feet moving stylishly in a meticulous and elegant manner. Behind each, their teammates huddle together expectantly, eyes glued onto each respective figure. After more thrusts, followed by a clash of blades, an explosion of green and red illuminates the room. All seems to go silent as the two fencers spring apart, each raising a fist to the sky. Everyone turns to stare at a man in a suit, who announces, “Attaque. Parry. Riposte. Touche.” He lifts his arms, making a series of movements before raising his right palm and turning it outwards. It isn’t long before the right side of the room erupts into cheers and one figure rips off his mask, letting out a passionate yell.
RCDS’ fencing team was founded by beloved RCDS alumni Joseph Rue and has grown to become one of the most memorable sports teams in the winter season. Led by captains Archer Pil’ 23, Adam Kern’ 23, Will Mahoney’ 23, Madi Danquah’ 23, and Elizabeth Lee’ 23, all of whom are experts in their respective weapons, the RCDS fencing team this year is as strong as ever.
With three weapons–saber, foil, and epee–to choose from, the fencing team offers aspiring fencers a chance to try their hand at a more eloquent style of sword fighting, albeit at a varsity level. Students can look forward to energy-filled inter school meets, where delicious snacks await; fun training activities such as “Free-fence Fridays”, where fencers can cross train between weapons; and both team and individual competitions, November 15 marking the beginning of the winter season and the FAA championships bringing a close.
