The Rye Country Day Employee Art Show, after a Covid-generated hiatus, has returned to RCDS. A biannual tradition before the pandemic, artists from all divisions of the school contributed to the show.
Eric Drotch, Chair of the Visual Arts Department, appreciated the variety in artists. “You would expect [artistic ambitions] from the folks who teach in the art department,” he said, “[but] a science teacher or an administrative assistant, they all have creative lives outside what they do on a daily basis [as well]. Dr. Krasovec, for example, is a science teacher, but she makes beautiful ceramics.”
Sixteen faculty members are featured in the show, only eight of whom are members of the Art Department: Lauren Behar, Lorraine Brimat-Smith, Pilar Bustamante, Patrick Cahill, Erin Dolan, Eric Drotch, Casey Hallen, D. D. Huang, Chris Kaye, Susan Keowen, Mary Krasovec, Gail Sestito, Gary Solem, Steven Tofano, Whitney Turner, and Nicole Zazzarino. Pieces range from oil and Chinese brush paintings to ceramics and stained glass to cake design, displaying the creativity and talent hidden within the RCDS faculty.
Drotch reflected on his gratitude for the participants, noting that “their willingness to show it [their work] says a lot about the community and the fact that they’d want to be part of an experience like this.”
The faculty art show, originally running through the month of September, was extended through October 24. Students and community members were invited to a reception on October 11, where most of the artists were present to discuss their work. During Wildcat Weekend, the Cohen Center will be open for families on campus to view the exhibition as well.
