Nick Vlasto–
Q: Would you mind telling us a little about yourself?
A: I have been at this school since Pre-K, so since 2009. I love History and English classes at school; outside of classes I love to play guitar. I’ve also been trying to get into voice acting, I got a mic and everything. I am excited to see how that goes. I tried acting last year– I did Macbeth where I played King Duncan which was a lot of fun. I have a dog named Molly, she’s 12. I live right in Rye very close to school and I have one brother.

Q: Are you excited about being student body president? Is it something you have wanted to do for a while or a new interest?
A: I have wanted to be student body president ever since I saw what it looked like back in eighth grade. Seeing the people that were ahead of me and [..] the role they had in the school, and how they didn’t just do it to check the boxes but actually put their soul into it and shaped how the year went. All the people before me were amazing leaders, so it’s something I wanted to do […] to give back to the school and more so its community. Also being able to be that advocate for students, which means listening to the administration and trying to bridge that gap. But finally, I want to have fun with my last year and use the energy that I have and the love that I have for this community and put that into something greater.
Q: A lot of students rely on you to represent them. What assurance do we as students have to make sure you are the right person for the job?
A: It was a very interesting experience to end up running unopposed, and I want to make everybody in the high school feel like this is the year for them to feel welcomed and confident. I have experimented with plenty of google forms and suggestions boxes but I want to get more informal. If you have a question about anything, I want to be able to point you in the right direction. Especially with the new students in the ninth grade, I don’t want to be this tall figure just roaming the halls, I would rather make everyone feel appreciated and confident in themselves and I want to spend my year doing that for people.
Q: What are your top goals for this year?
A: One of them would definitely be clubs. I know that there are the proper facilities, the people, and the ways of getting information out [so] that clubs can be an easier process for people that are interested. And also advertising them; […] if you’re not on an email list or you miss something [an email or Schoology announcement…], what is a central place you can look that [will] have the clubs that are actively meeting that can be checked by students? We have these giant TVs on the second floor in the Pinkham building, and we want to have a column that has the club schedule for Tuesdays and Fridays with the room numbers that are always up to date. The second thing is getting us out of the Covid mindset; we’ve had a different schedule every year since Covid happened with different day cycles, different lunch blocks, different start times and end times, which all cause confusion and anxiety for students. If this can be the year where the clutches of the pandemic can back away, and we can get back to being the community that we want to be, [that would be my goal. I want to] bring that excitement that we have been missing that can continue for years to come.
